Two People Who Can't Stop Drunk Texting Their Exes Will Make You Feel Better About Your Own Behavior

What the hell did you wake up to?

There are few trivial things more regretful than looking at your phone after a night of partying and seeing texts you sent to an ex. There are several Apps that help avoid these types of situations, including Drunk Mode, which has the ability to block exes numbers before a night out. Drunk Mode also offers a variety of other interesting features including a way to track your friends locations, a find your home button, and a way to retrace your steps from the night before.

Despite Drunk Mode boasting over 1.3 million users, plenty of people still drunk text exes. Personal Space spoke with two single twenty-somethings to get a behind-the-scenes look into why they do it and what would make them stop. Zeke B. is 28 and lives in the D.C. area. Hilary H. is 22 and lives in Austin, Texas. The two have almost nothing in common, aside from the fact that they both like to drunk text their exes.

Personal Space: Why do you drunk text your ex?

Zeke B: It’s some combination of loneliness, libido, and power. Anyone who denies those reasons is probably lying to themselves.

Hilary H: It’s usually because I’m sad and feeling apologetic.

What do you hope to get out of it?

ZB: Temporary companionship, temporary satisfaction, temporary soft bed... not necessarily in that order.

HH: I’m almost always desperate for some kind of closure.

Do you delete the texts after you send them?

ZB: Definitely not, you gotta face it. Can’t hide from that behavior.

HH: Yes. I always delete them.

Do you text the same ex every time or different ones?

ZB: It honestly depends on the night and what's going on in my head. Sometimes I have a someone specific in mind... sometimes I'm just looking for company. The case of the latter, I’ll kamikaze text half a dozen people. Each has pros and cons, especially the next morning.

HH: I text the same ex every time.

What is your go to late night text?

ZB: Lately, I stick almost exclusively to pictures of animals. I like Maine Coon cats, Shih Tzus, or maybe a pekingese. A text at 2:30 a.m. has a pretty obvious intent. I think sending something random or funny instead of a blatant, “What are you up to?” makes the situation slightly more manageable.

HH: My go to drunk text is “I’m soooooo sorry.”

What is the typical response?

ZB: I get lots of, “Haha, what?” and heart-eye-emoji responses.

HH:  I usually don't get a text back. If it’s a novel, I definitely won’t hear back. If it’s a short sweet text, I might get a response back.

Have you regretted it?

ZB: Not yet.

HH: Yes. almost every time.

Will you continue to text your ex when you are drunk?

ZB: I will.

HH: Probably, but I try as hard as I can to refrain.

What would make you stop?

ZB: Whenever I’ve been in a relationship, I’ve stopped drunk texting old hookups. However, I am committed to drunk texting whoever I’m dating.

HH:  Being in a relationship, or just a straightforward text back telling me to stop.

Have you ever drunk texted an ex when you were already dating someone else?

ZB: Nope, not about that life.

HH: Yes.

Has an ex every drunk texted you?

ZB: A couple. Always uncomfortable. Makes you think…

HH: Yes. It’s usually the same ex that I drunk text.
